Senior Staff Software Engineer

On-device AI · Product engineering · Observability · Portland, OR · remote-friendly

Senior staff product engineer. A decade of observability and platform work at New Relic, then the capture frontend of an FDA-cleared medical imaging system at Overjet. I ship reliability into products under real production pressure, and lately I build applications that run AI entirely on the device. I was in the core engineering group that took Overjet's Iris system to FDA 510(k) clearance, and I drove the offline resilience behind its 99.5% session finalization rate. At New Relic I shipped LLM-powered features to enterprise customers in 2023, before most teams had any in production. I work end to end and I mentor the engineers around me.

REC 01

Overjet

Senior Staff Software Engineer

Dental AI · Iris Intelligent Imaging System

  • Shipped the Iris capture frontend through FDA 510(k) clearance (K253930), the company’s first clearance in image capture and PACS.
  • Built offline-mode resilience so capture sessions finish through backend outages, driving a 99.5% session finalization rate. Converting the app to a PWA is what made it possible.
  • Scaled the capture product from one pilot clinic to 145 clinics.
  • Ended chronic instability for the largest enterprise clients by re-architecting backend status checks and adding circuit breakers and rate limiting. The fragile path now holds under load with no manual intervention.
  • Fixed C# / .NET TWAIN integrations for intraoral sensor capture, including vendor deviations from the spec that broke acquisition on real clinic hardware.
  • Stood up the team’s observability stack on OpenTelemetry, Loki, and Grafana, and built the dashboards Support adopted.
  • Lead engineer on the capture frontend; mentored the team on AI-assisted development.

REC 02

New Relic

Staff Software Engineer

Observability platform · Logging

  • Shipped two LLM-powered features in New Relic AI for Logging, error analysis on log lines and automatic generation of parsing expressions, in production for enterprise customers in 2023.
  • Rearchitected data fetching across Logging UI components to meet performance SLOs and cut query timeouts on large datasets.

Jan 2019 — Jan 2022

REC 03

New Relic

Lead Software Engineer

APM

  • Directed the team that rebuilt APM’s most-trafficked pages, the company’s core product, on the modern UI platform. The rebuild was cited in closing enterprise deals.
  • Took Lookout/Spyglass, a telemetry change-detection platform and UI, from incubator concept to production in a single quarter.
  • Designed a query abstraction layer so one UI codebase served applications instrumented with New Relic agents, OpenTelemetry, and other providers.

REC 04

New Relic

Senior Software Engineer

APM and Browser

  • On the team that broke up the Ruby monolith; built the first APM UI features on modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • Built the first event-based rather than metric-based filtering and faceting UIs.
  • Wrote declarative data-fetching chart components later adopted by the company-wide UI platform.
  • Shipped Browser features including GA of the Single Page Application monitoring UI.

Selected projects

  • Earshot One Kotlin core drives speech recognition on both iOS and Android. Whisper through WhisperKit on iOS, ONNX Runtime on Android. No audio leaves the phone.
  • Pencil Count A six-stage funnel that reads handwritten write-in votes off scanned ballot images using a 12B vision model running locally, and reconciles the tally against the official count.
  • Sitewinder An Android app that composes Whisper ASR, MiniLM embeddings, and Gemma 3 1B entirely on device, so you can ask questions about your own video library with the radio off.
  • SigPocket Ten years of observability work compressed into the screen you actually have on you when something pages. A mobile client for SigNoz, built because I wanted it.
